More about the Shilikales

Esther and Emmanuel Shilikale have been serving as missionaries in Tanzania since 2001. Emma and Esther train indigenous church leaders who have never been to Bible school. The goal for this training is to develop more leaders from the UPGs so that they can reproduce churches and have biblically trained leaders. The training includes Bible school courses and mission courses for those with different education levels, from educated to no formal education at all. The training focuses only on people who come from the tribes that are considered UPGs, or working among UPGs.

Since the training began, more churches have been planted among the UPGs. Currently, there are 55 students from 9 different tribes. But there are still 42 tribes in Tanzania that need to be reached so there is a need for more workers.

Emma and Esther are also involved in oral Bible translation for the Hadzabe people. The Hadzabe people are hunters and gatherers who live in the bush. They are one of a small tribe in Tanzania and have no Bible in their language. This oral Bible translation project will give the Hadzbe a Bible in their own language. It is oral because most of the Hadzabe don’t know how to read and write, but they like telling stories, so it is appropriate for them to have an oral Bible. They can share Bible stories with their own people.

Emma and Esther live and work among the Datooga people. They are working on planting ten more Datooga churches around the country. Pray for that God will provide workers who will be willing to live among the Datooga. The Datooga tribe is scattered all over the country in Tanzania. They are pastoralist people who normally live in places that are friendly to their cattle. Their areas mostly are more interior in the bush. In most of the areas, there are no roads.  Esther is involved in teaching at a primary school in our Datooga village. She teaches English and the Word of God. She walks about 2KM to school. The children are coming to Jesus, and the gospel is also being shared with the teachers. Esther is also raising chickens so that she can understand the challenges and profits with the idea that she can train local pastors to self-sustain their living through chicken farming.

Emmanuel and Esther have 4 children and 2 foster children.
