More about At-Risk Street Children – Un Jour Nouveau

In the city of Goma (Democratic Republic of Congo), there are more than one-thousand street children. These children have run away from home or are orphaned and find themselves living on the streets. They are vulnerable to all forms of abuse, as well as highly likely to begin using drugs and alcohol, joining gangs, and being raped.

After a multi-year informal ministry on the streets with many of these children, a vision was formed through a partnership of various ministries to begin to offer meals to these children. This is a program that consists of individual and group counseling, assessment of their health and mental health needs, and biblical leadership training. Un Jour Nouveau church and the counseling and ministry staff offer these services to children who come looking for help. This is supported through a partnership with Hoop & Toekemst (Hope and Future) based out of The Netherlands.

This program also has a house that is used as a “shelter home” for a small group of street children who have been identified as rehabilitation ready. This house serves as a transition house where the children are given time and space to heal before either being reunited with their families or placed into “foster homes” of families within the Un Jour Nouveau church community.

Currently, the house accommodates 12 children and has multiple counselors on-site throughout the day and night. These children receive three hot meals per day and have daily schedules that include art, sports, games, Bible lessons, leadership skill lessons, and trade training to prepare them for a better future.
