Yamawega Student Scholarship

The Yamawega Secondary Student Scholarship Program pairs eligible students from the Datooga communities with education sponsors in the US and worldwide.

Giving Goal

$60 per month

Sponsorship covers tuition, boarding fees, school uniforms, textbooks, and other materials for one student

The role of a sponsor is vitally important in the life of each student, not only to financially support their education but to foster a supportive relationship. Sponsors have an opportunity to encourage their sponsored student twice a year through a letter exchange.

Your generous support will not only help educate a young Datooga student, but will also expand the reach of the gospel of Jesus Christ among this unreached people group.

More about the Secondary Student Scholarship

The Yamawega Secondary Student Scholarship pairs eligible students from Datooga communities with education sponsors in the US and worldwide.

The Datooga people are a remote tribe in Tanzania, living difficult lives, suffering from poor nutrition, infectious disease, and high infant mortality rates. Families rely on children for labor and young girls are often forced into arranged marriages. Most Datooga practice animism and witchcraft and only about 4% are Christians. Most of the Datooga have not heard the gospel.

Literacy rates among Datooga communities are only 1% and there are numerous barriers to education. Secondary school opportunities are very limited due to spiritual, financial, and cultural barriers. The government only provides primary schooling up to grade 7. Secondary schools are private boarding schools that are far removed from the Datooga communities. Families are unable to afford the school fees and the secondary school sponsorship program will address these needs in this remote area of Tanzania.

In late 2017, the first 7 students who graduated primary school were successfully sponsored and started their studies at the Boray Secondary School. In 2020, many more students will be eligible to enter high school, and an anticipated increasing number of students applying for the scholarship as word spreads about this important program.

Stories of two students

Dagwenda is a beautiful young woman who has finished her first year of secondary school. Her sponsor’s commitment to her education has truly changed her life. She has accepted Christ as her Savior and dreams of returning to her village as a teacher. She asks for prayer that her father (a local witch doctor) and the rest of her family would receive Christ and that her younger siblings can attend secondary school also.

  • Luca just finished 7th grade and is praying for a sponsor for the opportunity to attend secondary school. He has given his life to Christ. He is a bright young man who already has an excellent command of the English language. His dream is to become a doctor and return to his community to minister to their spiritual and medical needs.
